What You Need To Know Before You Purchase Your Health Insurance

When you shop around for a health insurance plan, health insurance quotes can help narrow down your options and identify the best plan that fits your medical requirements and budget. The main types of quotes you will come across are:

* Indemnity of Fee-For-Service Plans - These offer the most convenience and flexibility because they allow you to visit any doctor of your choosing. These plans are in high demand but are getting more expensive.

* Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) - Most health insurance quotes are this type nowadays. HMOs are a group of health care providers who bundle their services together at a fixed price. HMOs are suitable for people on a tighter budget who are not looking for any specialized services outside of the network.

* Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) - PPOs offer the flexibility of using both your managed group services such as with HMOs, and also services outside of their network without a referral such as with the Fee-For-Service plans. PPOs are a bit more expensive than HMOs but cheaper than Fee-For-Service plans.

Once you have decided which plan to go with, the cheapest way to obtain health insurance quotes are through group coverage, such as from the workplace or professional organizations etc. If you cannot find any group coverage, individual coverage is another option, though far more expensive.

When you have purchased your plan, make sure to familiarize yourself with the health insurance coverage, which is a contract that specifies what medical benefits your health insurance provider will and will not cover. The extent of the covered medical services depends on the fee that you pay your health insurance company, and may include services such as prescriptions, checkups, and tests etc. All services not covered in your contract are also listed, and payment has to come out of your own pocket should you require them.

To keep yourself abreast as to what your health insurance provider covers or not, make sure you carefully read your health insurance coverage. In this way you wont be taken by surprise with a nasty health bill, and if your doctor recommends a treatment that is not covered by your health insurance, then you can request for alternative treatments that is covered.

Though a majority of treatments or procedures advised by doctors are covered in your health insurance plan, you may occasionally run across a treatment that is not covered. In this case, you can try and challenge the health insurance coverage to include this treatment in the coverage. Enlist the support of your doctor too.

Take Control of Your Health and Fitness

Health and fitness is your business and taking personal responsibility for one's own health is the key. Your health and fitness is in your power, and activity is a fundamental element of keeping healthy and fit. Because of its impact on wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, and husbands, health is truly a family issue. Health care and fitness is in our hands and can ultimately influence every aspect of life.

In its most general meaning, physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. Discover healthy tips on exercise, eating right and personal care. Choose physical activities that fit in with your daily routine, or choose recreational or structured exercise programs, or both. Exercise offers extra benefits for health compared to calorie restriction but prior to participating in any exercise program or activity, you should seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health professional. Exercise is one of the best things you can do for your health. 60 percent of American adults do not get enough exercise to improve their health but exercise physiology is rapidly becoming increasingly important in the delivery of health care.

The Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity recommends getting 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week. So just why should you get active and how little exercise can you get away with? A single session of exercise improves lipids and vascular function so even a single session of exercise will improve your health. Research confirms how important exercise and physical activity are to maintaining health and independence for older adults, and those on a traditional cardio exercise program saw their health improve more than twice as much as those on a walking regimen. There is some evidence that links exercise to better prostate health, and vigorous exercise helps to reduce abdominal fat. Walking is a popular form of exercise, but may not be enough to experience significant health benefits, a University of Alberta study shows. Remember that how well you eat and how much or little you exercise now affects not only your present state of health but also later life. Vigorous exercise involves minimal health risks for persons in good health or those following a doctor's advice.

Everyone knows that regular exercise improves your health and helps you feel good. With exercise, elders can improve weakened physical abilities and should do weight-bearing exercise (such as walking) regularly. To burn more calories it is better to exercise for a longer time. Fortunately, exercise can be free (not counting what you choose to spend on health-club memberships, workout clothes and bottled water).

Diet and lifestyle choices affect health and well-being, as do food safety policies and practices. Diet is a big contributor to health, but the science is complex and constantly evolving. A balanced diet and regular physical activity, along with restraining from smoking, are important factors in the promotion and maintenance of good health. There's far more research on diet and health available now than there was 30 years ago, and cholesterol continues as the focus of diet and health advice. By eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly, you are paving a path of good health. A good diet is central to overall good health, and many women health and fitness related problems can be avoided if careful attention is given to diet, specific nutrients and exercise.

Human nutrition is enormously complex and a healthy diet may vary widely according to an individual's genetic makeup, environment, and health. People diet for two primary reasons, to lose weight, to fix health or both, but not every diet will work for you. Crash diets and diet pills can compromise growth and are not recommended by many health care professionals. Choose a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol and moderate in total fat, and a detailed diet plan that states what, how, and when a person will eat and drink. Fruits and vegetables are key parts of your daily diet.

Natural Health Remedies - Debugging the Myths

The modern world is endlessly being turned by newly discovered treatments and medicines and sometimes seems to have forgotten the natural health remedies. The world of medication is being dominated by large pharmaceutical and research companies which have literally obliterated the other types of medicinal treatments over last few centuries. However, natural health remedies are currently experiencing a resurgence as the world takes a look back at its roots.

Natural remedies are often referred to as "alternative" medicine, alternative to the modern Western mode of medications that is. However, if we go a few hundred years back, these remedies are actually the mainstream remedies. Of course, one cannot argue that modern ways of treating ailments are effective, thus, the total disappearance of natural health medications and remedies seem inevitable. But it is also a fact that there are natural remedies that really works, and more and more people are starting to realize that.

There are many reasons why people are going back into using natural health remedies. The natural ways of treating certain ailments can come as a first aid treatment, whenever modern medicines are not available. First of all, natural health remedies are becoming more popular because of the expensive cost of Western medicines. The oligopolies that consist of the big pharmaceutical companies have jacked up the prices of medicines, leaving many people to resort to other alternatives. Secondly, more and more people are becoming aware and wary of the side effects of some medicines. Bodies react differently to medicines.

Some people just don't believe in the power of natural remedies, thinking that these are lame attempts to address a certain ailment. That's unfortunate because the empirical evidence shows that natural remedies and natural medicine works.

Debugging the Myth about Natural Health Products

The concept of health promotion has evolved because of the changing definition of health and an awareness that wellness exists at many levels of functioning. The definition of health as the mere absence of disease is no longer accepted.

Today, health is viewed as a dynamic, ever-changing condition that enables a person to function at an optimum potential at any given time.

The ideal health status is one in which people are successful in achieving their full potential regardless of any limitations they might have.

Wellness, as a reflection of health, involves a conscious and deliberate attempt to maximize one's health. Wellness does not just happen; it requires planning and conscious commitment and is the result of adopting lifestyle behaviors for attaining one's highest potential for well-being.

Wellness is not the same for every person. The person with chronic illness or disability may still be able to achieve a desirable level of wellness. The key to wellness is to function at the highest potential within the limitations over which there is no control and to obtain the most natural health products that will help supplement the much-needed boost in an individual's total well being.

A significant amount of information has shown that people, by virtue of what they eat or drink, influence their own health. Today, many of the major causes of illnesses are chronic diseases closely related to the kind of food that they eat.

Hence, health experts highly recommend the intake of natural health product to ensure optimum health promotion.

Since the 1950's, many health promotion models have been constructed to identify health-protecting behaviors and to help explain why people need to consume natural health products everyday.

Natural health products are among the highly recommended products by the health experts in promoting wellness without the harmful side effects.

According to the Natural Health Products Regulations, the items classified as natural health products include homeopathic medicines, minerals, vitamins, probiotics, herbal medicines, different kinds of products such as essential fatty acids, and traditional medicines.

In essence, natural health products are considered safe and effective. The government does not require prescriptions because they are not prescription drugs.

Considered as OTCs or over-the-counter medications, natural health products can be administered alone and the option to consume the products can be a matter of personal choice.

Texas Individual Health Insurance

The Texas individual health insurance market is flush with top health insurance companies like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, UniCare of Texas, United Healthcare of Texas, Aetna of Texas, Humana of Texas, PacifiCare of Texas and many more. The choices may seem overwhelming but do your research and take advantage of the tools that are available to you and your Texas individual health insurance search will be a snap!

Texas individual health insurance is different from Texas group health insurance in that most companies will have questions on the application for individual health concerning your health history going back 10 years. On the individual side most TX companies will scrutinize your health history for pre-existing conditions and will underwrite you based on your health history. This is opposed to the group health approach where the health insurance company will not closely scrutinize your health history but will underwrite your group as a whole. It follows then that individual health insurance in Texas is much cheaper than group because of this difference in underwriting.

Texas individual health insurance is very affordable for individuals, families, and the self employed. However, keep in mind that the rates are based on your home residence zip code. Thus, some companies are more competitive in certain areas of TX as opposed to others. Always compare quotes from multiple companies side by side to be sure that you are receiving the best value. Compare Texas individual health insurance quotes for free at Texas Health Insurance 360.

Texas individual health insurance companies can vary in reputation quite a bit as well. Be sure to research any health insurance company that you have never heard of and consult an independent agent that can offer you objective advice. For the most part you will want to stick with a well-known and reputable company like United Healthcare of Texas, Aetna of Texas, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, UniCare of Texas, Humana of Texas, and PacifiCare of Texas.

Texas individual health insurance agents can be categorized into two main categories: Independent Health Insurance Agents and Captive Health Insurance Agents. You will want to make sure that you enlist the help of an independent agent/broker rather than a captive agent as Texas independent agents can work with multiple companies and "shop" quotes for you to find you the best value in a policy where a captive agent can only work with one health insurance Company.

Ensure your Child's Wellness While Going Through College with College Health Insurance

Nowadays, there is a vast increase of medical care cost. Along with this is a substantial need for health insurances. Today, it is not economical that people do not have health insurances. Though health insurances can somehow be costly, the benefit and relief it gives to people is relentless.

Parents perhaps, who have a child going to college, will make a list of possible things their child might need when studying on universities or colleges. This might include tuition fee, board and lodging fee and miscellaneous. But don't you consider applying them for a health insurance a need?

Usually, health insurances acquired by parents through their work have coverage for their children until the age of 24 neglecting the fact whether the child lives with his/her parents or not. Nonetheless, other schools have college health insurances that are added on their tuition fees. In this way, parents don't have to worry about buying a health insurance policy for their child.

Always bear in mind that college health insurances are not free of charge. The benefit you'll gain from it differs depending what college are you into. The college committee heads responsible in arranging health benefits for their students meet with the insurance companies in order to derive a proposal intended only for the specific needs of their students.

Students then can go to "health centers for college" to acquire free services such as office visits and physical check-ups. Laboratory works such as x-rays, physical therapy and treatment procedures may have a corresponding cost. Additional covered services such as pelvic exams, HIV testing, cholesterol screening, infant care and child wellness care are also included on some college plans.

If you have to attend on special medical needs, you have to determine first whether your college health insurance can cover your medical expenses. This will determine if you will need a different health insurance policy or not.

Scrutinize your college health insurance. Ask these questions and if your health insurance has an answer for all of this then you are left with no worries!

o Is your college insurance policy a HMO or can you use whichever provider?

o Does your college health insurance requires an authorization letter for every emergency visits?

o What are the stages to undergo for the coverage of possible emergency incidents?

o Do emergency incidents which took over during summer vacations covered?

o Does the health insurance offer the most competent health treatment facilities?

o Which services are of free of charge?

o Which services are of low cost of charge?

o What kind of pre-existing health condition is excluded?

o Is the cost for the college health insurance makes a high percentage of the tuition fee?

As the saying goes "health is wealth", you (as a parent) have to ensure the wellness of your child. Your child who is going to college may require him/her being away from you. Therefore, you can not monitor his/her health condition. Ensuring his/her health benefits will somehow lessen your worries of future health problems that he/she might encounter.

You, as the college student, have to make use of your health benefits. Always remember that you have already paid for it. Therefore, never neglect whatever physical illnesses you're encountering or feeling. College health insurances are given to ensure your wellness especially now that you're taking your step on being independent from your parents.

Temporary Health Insurance - Is Short-Term Medical Right For You

Short-Term health insurance often times is much more affordable than a COBRA plan or even an individual health plan. Although it may be substantially more cost effective, there is a right and a wrong time to purchase a Short-Term health plan.

Short-Term health insurance was created to fill a gap between coverage periods. As group health insurance rates have increased, the cost of COBRA has become out of reach for some people. If a person does not keep a continuation of health insurance over a period of 18 months, and try to enroll to a new group health plan, often times the new insurer will put a waiver on pre-existing conditions. Short-Term medical insurance can be a great way to keep a continuation of coverage.

There are risks involved with a Short-Term health plan. Short-Term health often will not cover any pre-existing conditions. They usually ask very vague questions about past health history. They approve the policies based on the honors system. Generally if you can answer "no" to 6-10 questions, the policy is approved. This does not mean that the insurance company is going to pay for any and all claims, especially pre-existing conditions and/or medications which are being taken at the time of enrollment. Please read and understand the contract/brochure very carefully.

Remember a Short-Term medical plan is exactly as it is titled. This is a temporary health insurance. Most plans do not give you the right to renew the policy when the policy ends. Even the ones which do allow you to renew are often not guaranteed renewable plans. This means that if there were a substantial claim while being enrolled to the original plan, they may not allow you to renew the plan. This is very important to understand. If you were to obtain cancer while being covered by a Short-Term health insurance plan, you will be covered during the period originally purchased. If you do not have a group plan lined up, and need to purchase another period to cover you, they will often not issue a new policy, you are then left uninsured at the most inopportune time, when you actually need the insurance.

If a person has another job lined up, but has a waiting period before the new health insurance plan will become effective, this is a great time to take advantage of a low cost short-term medical plan. If anything were to happen during the period of coverage on the Short-Term health plan, you will not need to renew it, because you will have a group plan starting at the end of the Short-Term health plan. Because you had a continuation of credible coverage in the Short-Term plan, the new group plan will likely not cover any pre-existing conditions you may have.

If a person was fired or laid off and does not have another job/insurance lined up, Short-Term medical may be a bad choice at this time. Again, if you have that unlucky occurrence of a major illness and/or accident, you will only be covered for the original purchase period, afterwards you are on your own, with no health insurance. Instead of Short-Term medical, a permanent individual plan may be a better answer. Most individual health plans are not able to cancel your policy due to claim, therefore if you had a major illness, you will have coverage as long as you pay your premium. If you have no major illness and become eligible for another group plan, you can always cancel the permanent individual plan.

Some Short-Term Health insurance plans now have a full year coverage option. Some agents sell the plan as an affordable "individual" health insurance option. This is likely not a good option. If you do not have another plan lined up or are not between coverage, you should not consider a Short-Term Health plan a permanent replacement insurance.

Please keep in mind, there is not one health plan which fits everyone's need. Do your research and talk to an agent if needed to ensure you find a plan which best fits your situation.

Every Thing You Need to Know About Individual Health Insurance Plans (Part I)

If you are one of the many individuals who are not covered by group health insurance through your employer or other organization, you will need to go out into the market and research individual health insurance plans. Individual health insurance plans essentially come in two "flavors": Indemnity (fee-for-service) and managed care plans (HMO, PPO, POS). In general terms, the major differences lie in the choice of healthcare providers, out-of-pocket expenses, and how the bills are paid.

Even though the health insurance market has seen a dramatic shift away from indemnity plans (due to higher costs), these plans are still often referred to as the more traditional form of health insurance since they have been around the longest.

For indemnity health plans, individuals typically pay a predetermined percentage of medical care costs (called co-insurance) and the insurance company pays the balance. A common indemnity plan is an 80/20 plan, where the insurance company pays 80% and you, the insured, pay 20%. Your insurance company will only make payment in accordance with the "usual, customary, and reasonable" (UCR) fees as determined, which are based on what health care providers charge in your area for a given service. Of course, if your individual health insurance plan has a deductible, this must be met first before this pay structure kicks in.

Depending on your indemnity health plan, you may be required to pay for services upfront and submit claims for reimbursement directly from the insurance company, as opposed to your provider directly billing your insurance company for services.

While an indemnity individual health plan allows you much freedom in terms of provider and medical facility choice, this freedom does not come cheap. The cost can vary as to how much of a deductible you have and your out-of-pocket limit. As you might expect, as your out-of-pocket expenses increase (deductibles, co-pays, co-insurance), the cost of your health care premiums go down. Even so, this is one of the more expensive types of individual health insurance plans out there.

Additional individual health insurance plans are managed health care plans, like HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations), PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations), and POS (Point of Service) plans.

Managed health care plans have become the most popular form of health care coverage offered in the United States today. One of the reasons that managed care plans have become so popular is because of cost. Indeed, as health care costs continue to rise at double digit increases year after year, those looking for the most affordable individual health plans available more often than not choose managed care plans, as they are the least expensive.

Managed health care plans are plans work off the basic premise that health care costs can be better controlled by controlling access to health treatments and services. While this may be true and works to keep costs down, from a patient's perspective, it can be difficult to get approval for health care that goes beyond basic preventative care. You will need to see doctors within the HMO network and any specialists that you do see will need to be by referral. This loss of freedom is the trade off you must accept in return for more affordable individual health insurance plans.

Affordable Health Insurance for Small Businesses

Health insurance for small businesses is necessary for the safety and good health of the owner and employees. All small business establishments should have health insurance regardless of their bottom line. Health insurance rates for small businesses depend on the benefits ensured. Premiums for these insurance policies can be paid either by the employer or employees, either separately or as a group.

Health insurance for small businesses is ideal for small business organizations having a minimum of 2 to 50 employees. Small business health insurance provides tax free insurance coverage to the employees of an organization. There are different policies available and they are generally formulated according to the age and number of employees, size of organization and health risks. All these factors are important in determining policy terms and benefits.

Health insurance for small businesses comes in various forms such as free-for service (FFS), health maintenance organizations (HMO), point of service plans (POS) and preferred provider organizations (PPO). Most of these plans offer affordable services. Among these, HMO (health maintenance organizations) is the least expensive option. POS is more flexible than HMO. FFS is also flexible, but it requires more paper work and higher premiums. The rate calculation in small business health coverage differs from state to state and company to company. Many affordable health insurances for small businesses also provide benefits extending to the spouse or other family members.

The main advantage of health insurance for small businesses is that they are affordable to all classes of people. This health insurance is beneficial to people who are facing economic problems. People interested in purchasing a small business policy need to avoid expensive policies such as hospital indemnity policies and dread disease policy.

Additionally, 14 percent of Ohio residents under the age of sixty-five did not have health insurance during 2005.

AFFORDABLE HEALTH INSURANCE OPTIONS IN OHIO

Most Ohioans who have health insurance are covered by either employer based plans or government programs. What options are available for individuals who do not have access to such coverage? Ohio Department of Insurance Director, Ann Womer Benjamin, references the "increasing number of options with Health Savings Accounts. There may be a person, or a family, generally comfortable paying for health care costs, but wants a high deductible policy. Also, for fairly young, fairly healthy individuals, an HSA coupled with a High Deductible Health Plan could really work."

Health Savings Accounts are not feasible for everyone. Ohio residents who are not interested in HSAs should try to take advantage of alternative plans and programs. "Ohio has an Open Enrollment Program that takes (uninsured individuals) regardless of pre-existing conditions, but is likely costly", Womer Benjamin explains.

HEALTH CARE COVERAGE LEGISLATION

There are currently two bills in the Ohio Legislature, Senate Bill 272 and House Bill 5 / Senate Bill 5 that are generally supported by the Ohio Department of Insurance as methods of expanding access to health insurance coverage.

Senate Bill 272 would repeal the Open Enrollment Program, as well as the Open Enrollment Reinsurance Program. In its place, the Ohio Health Insurance Risk Pool would be created to provide health care coverage to individuals who are unable to obtain affordable health care coverage in any other manner. This would eliminate the annual periods of open enrollment that sickness and accident insurers, health insurance corporations, and multiple employer welfare arrangements (MEWAs) are currently required to hold. "The Ohio Health Insurance Risk Pool would provide a state fund for those without health insurance coverage. We would support this concept and have various suggestions for funding. We would theoretically be able to reach ten times more individuals than the Open Enrollment Program does currently", says Womer Benjamin.

House Bill 5 / Senate Bill 5 would permit small employers to offer health care plans that do not provide benefits otherwise required by law. The bill provides for the operation of health savings accounts that are consistent with federal law, and places a limit on an insured's liability for co-payments and deductibles under a health benefit plan. ODI Director Womer Benjamin asserts that the bill "would provide more options for small businesses, and we are hopeful that that will pass".

THE MASSACHUSETTS EXAMPLE

On April 4, 2006, Massachusetts House Bill 4850 was overwhelmingly passed by the state legislature. All Massachusetts residents will be required to obtain health insurance coverage by July 1, 2007. The state's plan dictates that businesses with more than ten employees that do not provide health insurance coverage will be charged a fee of as much as $295 a year for each employee. Government subsidies to private insurance plans will provide affordable health insurance to a greater number of the working poor, and individuals who can afford private health plans will be penalized on their state income taxes if they do not have coverage. Should Ohio consider a similar plan in order to achieve nearly universal health insurance coverage? Ohio Department of Insurance Director Ann Womer Benjamin says that we need to "watch Massachusetts and evaluate the plan's success and funding". "Ohio has a larger number of uninsured individuals and is different than Massachusetts, politically."

Ohioans have a large selection of health insurance carriers and government programs to choose from. Regardless of the provider, it is extremely important for individuals to obtain a health insurance plan. Director Womer Benjamin emphasizes that she is "concerned with people who don't think they need health insurance coverage".

Improve your Well-Being through Affordable Health Care Plans

You and your family deserve nothing but the best health care services. When you look for a job, one of the first things that you ask for is the employee health benefits that you will be receiving.

When your child or another member of the family gets sick, do you have ample coverage to cover the costs or would you have to get a loan to cover the medical expenses?

You will never know what emergency might come up so it is vital for you to have a comprehensive health care plan.

However, health care costs are soaring each year so it is important to look around for the best health care plans that you can take advantage of. You need to make sure that you are getting ample coverage while getting your money's worth.

There are two basic types of health insurance coverage that you can get: the private health insurance plans that you can purchase as an individual. Second, there are government-sponsored health insurance plans.

Take a look at some other types of health insurance plans that you can get for you and your family:

o Health Care Plans for Employees

One of the benefits that you and your immediate family can get when you have a regular work is the health care plan offered by your employer. Some individuals choose to work for the companies who have the most comprehensive health care plans for their families.

Before signing any pre-employment contracts, ask your Human Resources manager about the health care plans that you will get.

If you are self-employed or if you are a casual employee, make sure that you will still sign-up for a health care benefits plan.

o Privately Purchased Insurance Plans

The health care privileges offered by your company and the ones accessible through the government can be combined. However, if you feel that the coverage that you will get is insufficient, especially if you have a medical history, then you might want to get a separate health care plan for yourself.

This is where you need to do your research. There are a lot of companies which offer discounted health plans and the lowest health insurance quotes. Just ask around or browse the Internet to get the most comprehensive health care plan out of your hard-earned dollars.

When looking for the best health insurance company to cover your health care needs, remember the following:

1. Check out the discounted medical benefits included in the health care plan.

2. Be open about your medical history and pre-existing conditions.

3. Check out the benefits for your dependents or your immediate family.

4. Study thoroughly the monthly premiums, deductibles and other costs not included with the health care plan.

5. Ask about the dental plans, nursing care, hospital facilities, preventive care, elderly care and all the other related services that you might need in the future.

6. When getting a private health insurance plan, do your research and look for members who are satisfied with the services of the company that you will be going for.

When looking for a health insurance provider, it would never hurt to be thorough and ask a lot of questions if you need to.

You should know everything about your health care insurance benefits before signing-up for a particular plan. Make sure that the plan will meet all your medical and health care needs so that you can get your money's worth while taking care of your family's health care needs at the same time.
